To Be Creative... Instead of Destructive

Well, I finally figured out how to get a hold of people at the Chinese web site and get in to politely e-mail each person who had downloaded an illegal version of Santa’s Dragon. I told them how sad I thought it was that they thanked the person who shared it, complimented the design... but stole from the person who created it. Oddly enough, I am now locked out of that portion of the site, so I have sent a second request to the authorities to confirm that they have removed the files as requested.

While it made me sad and grumpy for the rest of that day, I found that the best solution was to do something creative. My dear friend Barb and Stephanie Pearl-McPhee a.k.a. Yarn Harlot have me totally hooked on knitting socks now. Barb sent me some lovely wool to tempt me through my initial fears of learning how to turn a heel. I am now on my second pair of socks ever and loving it!

I also spent more time sketching to keep my drawing hands limber and that made me realize something very important.

While it still makes me sad to think that some people consider it permissible to share patterns electronically and I begrudge the time it takes me to police or defend my work, in the end it is up to each of us how we live our lives with respect to the world around us.

I can honestly say that I have tried to be more creative than destructive. They may have the ability to steal my work... but I had the talent to create it in the first place.

Honest stitchers, crafters, knitters, artists, musicians and other creative souls know how much power there is in creating something of beauty and bringing it to life. When we add beauty to the world, care for our planet or treat each other with respect and love, then we are making the universe a better place one act of creation at a time.

I can't believe how wonderful your socks look. I am so happy you have joined me in the addiction. I love the yarn. Knitting socks is like crack.....but in a good way.

The socks look gorgeous. I am jealous of anyone who can knit that well. I've tried to learn I don't know how many times.
Would it help if honest stitchers joined the designers in asking these sites to take down illegally posted patterns? Or maybe we could contact our elected representatives to get our governments to pressure the host businesses? I am sure if the designers ask stitchers will respond.

Your sock looks great ... love the colors.

As to your need to move on to other venues, you just do what you have to do ... we stitchers will be delighted with the less frequent offerrings which will be all the more precious for being rare.

Of course, I can afford to be philosophical because I own nine of your leaflets and have only stitched two of them so far. So, I'm good to go for a while yet. Withdrawal pangs are way off in the future. I will, of course, be looking for The Guardian in every shop I pass in my travels ... I love that chart and am currently kicking myself for not buying it the last time I saw it. If you ever put that design on Patterns On-Line, I will purchase it in a heartbeat.

I will be checking in on your blog frequently ... you have a great deal to offer above & beyond needleart designs ... and I love reading about it all.

I just gave a book to my best buddy for her birthday and thought you may be interested because it is pretty humorous.

It's called "Divorced, Drunk and Covered in Cat Hair".LOL It's a very funny, true story of how a woman came through a tough time in her life by learning to knit. There is even some interesting patterns. Available at Chapters. (PS...I only recommend it because it is funny and the patterns are as well.)

I love your sock. :o)

Hi Jen, I am the lucky recipient of said book given to me by my best buddy Lori-Ann... I have just started reading it and it's gearing up to be a pretty funny read, haven't seen any patterns yet, but you will be welcome to borrow it if you'd like, when I'm done. (we can all use a good laugh)

LOVE the socks, I want to try a pair, just haven't picked up that particular yarn yet, I love the stripes it makes.

Take care, see you "ratting"

Sue

Hey Jennifer,
I am on your side that someone should steal your Santa Dragon is very evil and bad. I have been using your free patterns for years and whenever someone asks about I give you credit and even have sent some people to the correct places to purchase you designs. I have made shirts out of the designs and love them to pieces but I have never made them for any other person than for myself.
Hugs,
Marsha / Dragonwitch
